Teri has been an STS employee for the past 13 years and has been in the field of medical transcription for 23 years. We are pleased to have Teri tell us about herself and her family and share her some of her history in medical transcription. Teri’s background on herself as a transcriptionist: I studied medical transcription at Cypress College in Southern California in 1988, a 2-year program that I finished in 1 year after which I was hired right out of school by UCI Medical Center, a hospital in Southern California, in 1989. I was there until 1991 as we were outsourced. I then went to work for Fullerton Internal Medicine which became St Jude Heritage Health and was there until around 2001. I also worked for STS part-time from approximately 1998 – 2001 and then employed full-time with STS to current. I still type for some of the same doctors at St Jude Heritage, Fullerton, that I typed for back when I worked for them. I pretty much specialize in/like dermatology. I also type gastroenterology, cardiology, orthopedics, endocrinology, pulmonology, rheumatology and internal medicine. I have an AA from Chaffee College in Alta Loma. I also went to Cypress College as mentioned above and got my certificate in their Medical Transcription program. |

How Teri got started in the medical transcription field: At that time in my life I needed to work to support my kids. I had not worked in years and was going to an adult education school to brush up on my typing and learning computer programs when someone mentioned medical transcription. I signed up at Cypress College for their Medical Transcription program and enjoyed it. I was really surprised when one of the instructors approached me stating that UCI Medical Center called looking for someone near the end of the program. She offered me the opportunity. I went down, applied and was hired the same day. So the field sort of picked me! I have been working in this field ever since. About Teri and her family: I recently remarried, as of 3/11/11. I met James through my church, Calvary Chapel, Lake Elsinore, California. I spend a lot of time with my family and my church. I have 3 sons; Jerry age 33, Daniel age 29, and Brandon age 18. Jerry is married and I have 3 grandchildren by him. Daniel is working as an LA Certified Welder. Brandon still lives with me except last year when he attended Cal State Monterey Bay. He is home now and has been accepted to Cal Baptist University in Riverside. I also take care of my mother who is 83. I just moved her into an assisted living facility in Escondido and manage all of her affairs. I go to Calvary Chapel, Lake Elsinore and am involved in home Bible studies, one of which is held in my home. I like to read, I go to the gym, and I like to go to the movies. I used to paint, but have not gotten back into that yet. I spend a lot of time helping my mother, motivating Brandon to apply for scholarships and jobs (not so sure that’s a favorite thing to do), and just relaxing at home with my new husband. Oh, I have also just gotten back into cooking! Shumaker Transcription has been the perfect place for me through all the seasons of my life. I thank you. Thank you Teri for being part of STS and for sharing your story! We are happy to have you and CONGRATULATIONS! |
